A bent shaft is a mechanical condition where the centerline of a rotating shaft deviates from a true geometric axis of rotation, resulting in permanent or semi-permanent curvature.
Physical Mechanism
A shaft bend introduces continuous radial displacement as the shaft rotates. This creates cyclic bending stress and uneven load distribution along bearings and couplings.
Common causes include:
- Excessive static or dynamic loading
- Thermal distortion during operation or shutdown
- Improper handling or installation
- Mechanical impact or rotor contact
- Manufacturing defects (less common in modern equipment)
The shaft rotation forces the bent geometry to orbit around the bearing centers, generating cyclic forces once per revolution.
Signal Signature
Bent shaft conditions typically appear in vibration data as:
- Strong 1× running speed component in radial direction
- Elevated vibration in both horizontal and vertical planes
- Stable phase relationship across measurements (phase “locks in”)
- Possible presence of harmonics if secondary nonlinearity exists
In time waveform:
- Smooth, sinusoidal-like waveform dominated by 1× RPM
In orbit plots (if available):
- Elliptical orbit with consistent orientation
Diagnostic Relevance
Bent shaft vibration is commonly associated with:
- Persistent 1× vibration that does not improve after balancing
- Radial vibration dominance over axial vibration
- Misdiagnosis as simple imbalance (very common field error)
It is important because it can:
- Increase bearing loading continuously
- Accelerate fatigue in shafts and couplings
- Induce secondary misalignment in connected equipment
Interpretation Notes
- Bent shaft is often confused with rotor imbalance because both produce 1× RPM vibration.
- Key differentiator: imbalance typically responds to balancing; bent shaft does not fully correct with balance weight changes.
